{"id":1913,"date":"2015-08-27T11:46:38","date_gmt":"2015-08-27T18:46:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/verbalrights.com\/?p=1913"},"modified":"2025-07-30T13:50:38","modified_gmt":"2025-07-30T20:50:38","slug":"elmer-fudd-sign-reading-negro-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/verbalrights.com\/?p=1913","title":{"rendered":"Elmer Fudd sign reading \u201cNegro season&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Like a Rorschach ink blot, different Atlanta residents are taking away different interpretations of a piece of street art painted on the side of a building depicting cartoon character Elmer Fudd with a shotgun in hand beneath a sign reading \u201cNegro season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to CBS46, the graffiti was painted on the side of a building housing Allied Barton \u2014 a security company that provides armed and uniformed security officers \u2014 and is just blocks away from an art school.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the cartoon Elmer Fudd, the artist\u2019s rendition has Fudd in a cop\u2019s uniform instead of hunting clothes and deer stalker hat.<\/p>\n<p>While some residents see the artwork as racially motivated, encouraging police to gun down African Americans, others see it as mocking police as bumbling incompetents who hunt and kill innocent blacks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes people feel unsafe, you know, uncomfortable\u201d said one woman.<\/p>\n<p>Another man told CBS46, \u201cHe\u2019s trying to intimidate black people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s definitely white,\u201d another woman suggested of the artist. \u201cI don\u2019t see why somebody would want to do that if he was being racist to his own kind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another woman said it might be a \u201cpolitical statement\u201d from a Black Lives Matter activist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m seeing the police with a gun,\u201d one woman said while looking at pictures of the painting. \u201cAnd the sign says \u2018Negro season\u2019 which means that the police are killing the blacks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another man was neutral on the intent of the artist \u2014 identified by a scrawled \u2018MAES\u2019 \u2014 appreciating the work no matter what the message.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome people could take it offensive.
